Pure Cotton Srikalahasti Kalamkari saree from Andhra Pradesh. The highlight of this saree is the unique way in which they are made. The Srikalahasti style of Kalamkari, is where the "kalam" or pen is used for free hand drawing of the subject and filling in the colours, this is entirely hand work. This style focuses more on designs inspired by flowers around temples, temple hangings, chariot banners, depicted deities and scenes taken from the great Hindu epics - Ramayana, Mahabharata, Puranas and the mythological classics. The cotton fabric gets its glossiness by immersing it for an hour in a mixture of Myrobalans and cow milk. Various effects are obtained by using cow dung, seeds, plants and crushed flowers to obtain natural dye. Disclaimer - This saree is a completely handcrafted product. These sarees are made with vegetable dyes and are washed a couple of times in milk giving a guarantee of the colour, due to this process the cloth gives a washed feeling. This is only due to the process involved in the creation of this piece. This method retains the colour of this saree for atleast 15 to 20 years increasing shelf life.
